A Generalized Taylor-Aris Formula and Skew Diffusion

چکیده
This paper concerns the Taylor-Aris dispersion of a dilute solute concentration immersed in a highly heterogeneous fluid flow having possibly sharp interfaces (discontinuities) in the diffusion coefficient and flow velocity. The focus is two-fold: (i) Calculation of the longitudinal effective dispersion coefficient, and (ii) sample path analysis of the underlying stochastic process governing the motion of solute particles. Essentially complete solutions are obtained for both problems.

Ballistic dispersion in temperature gradient focusing
Molecular dispersion is caused by both molecular diffusion and non-uniform bulk fluid motion. While the Taylor–Aris dispersion regime is the most familiar regime in microfluidic systems, an oft-overlooked regime is that of purely kinematic (or ballistic) dispersion. In most microfluidic systems, this dispersion regime is transient and quickly gives way to Taylor–Aris dispersion. In electrophore...
متن کاملTaylor-Aris dispersion in temperature gradient focusing.
Microfluidic temperature gradient focusing (TGF) uses an axial temperature gradient to induce a gradient in electrophoretic flux within a microchannel. When balanced with an opposing fluid flow, charged analytes simultaneously focus and separate according to their electrophoretic mobilities. We present a theoretical and experimental study of dispersion in TGF. We model the system using generali...
متن کاملDispersion of biased swimming microorganisms in a fluid flowing through a tube
Classical Taylor-Aris dispersion theory is extended to describe the transport of suspensions of self-propelled dipolar cells in a tubular flow. General expressions for the mean drift and effective diffusivity are determined exactly in terms of axial moments, and compared with an approximation a la Taylor. As in the Taylor-Aris case, the skewness of a finite distribution of biased swimming cells...
متن کاملA Flexible Skew-Generalized Normal Distribution
In this paper, we consider a flexible skew-generalized normal distribution. This distribution is denoted by $FSGN(/lambda _1, /lambda _2 /theta)$. It contains the normal, skew-normal (Azzalini, 1985), skew generalized normal (Arellano-Valle et al., 2004) and skew flexible-normal (Gomez et al., 2011) distributions as special cases. Some important properties of this distribution are establi...
متن کاملTaylor-Aris dispersion in high aspect ratio columns of nearly rectangular cross section
We consider Taylor-Aris dispersion in columns of nearly rectangular cross section of large aspect ratio. We generalize the results of [1] and [2] who showed that the effective diffusion rate for perfectly rectangular cross sections is remarkably different than the diffusion rate between two parallel plates – as the aspect ratio goes to infinity, the effective diffusion rate does not approach th...
